Software for trading shares, currency and financial products
FIDO receives numerous emails and phone calls about software programs for trading shares, foreign currency and other financial products. People have been quoted as much as $6,000 or more, and they want to know if FIDO has any anything to say about a particular product or brand. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission looks at these products in any detail only if we have a complaint that the law has been broken, and will publish details only if we have taken enforcement action.
Here are two quick tips for starters
Tip 1: Shop around
One of FIDO’s first questions is ‘Have you shopped around?’ Quite often, people answer ‘No’.
If you are considering software, please check what else is on the market. You’ll quickly discover a range of prices and quality.
At least one commercially published investor magazine regularly surveys prices and features offered in various packages. When you consider the cost, and the fact that you may be relying on the program to help you trade, it’s well worth the time to shop around.
Tip 2: Find out what it is really like to trade
Our second question is ‘Have you ever traded financial markets before? ‘Again quite often people answer ‘No’.
In that case, you could find it worthwhile to read some of the books written by people who have. There are some good Australian titles, but do avoid the ‘get rich quick’ stuff. Look out for books that tell you how to manage risks, manage your capital and ways of dealing with losing and winning trades.

FIDO’s received a glossy share trading software sales brochure promoting luxury lifestyles and wealth creation. Pictures of people with laptop computers at the beach or in a hammock suggest that share trading using software programs would be simple and easy. Can successful share trading be this simple?
‘Don’t buy the software before you start educating yourself about the sharemarket. Make sure you are comfortable about your investment requirements and know what you’re after before you consider anything like this. The bottom line is that none of these programs are guaranteed. No-one has found the magic mechanism and anyone who encourages you to think that they have is someone to avoid.’ Read the rest of this interview with ASIC’s Director of Consumer Protection
