Software Programs
The program that allows a computer to work and function properly is called computer software. The sets of instructions which can be executed are called software programs and are used to operate the computer. Modern computers are getting faster and more complicated software programming is used to make them function. They are now used almost everywhere – from the home to the office up to outer space and the farthest reaches of the universe. What we know as computers are usually the personal computers. But strictly speaking, computers refer to small embedded chips that contain integrated circuits in them. These small chips are programmed to control various devices such as a simple calculator, digital cameras, cellular phones and children’s toys.

Sharper Brain
Modern life as we know it today would grind to a halt if computers are suddenly taken out of society. There are thousands and thousands of uses for software programs that we tend to take them for granted. People are often surprised to know that something that seems ubiquitous has a software program in it. An example would be a TV remote control device. Imagine if your TV has only an analog dial (back to the 1960s) and is not digital. How can you possible switch so many channels with today’s cable TV connections? Software programs are used in very sophisticated and complex endeavors such as sending a man to the moon. They are used to control fighter aircrafts, guide giant navy ships and used in manufacturing via industrial robots.
Software programs are actually sets of instructions intended for processing by a computer chip. To put it simply, the software program corresponds to the human logic translated into mathematical formulas. This is the scientific principle when we input our data into a calculator, for example. The day is not far off when computer software programs will be able to imitate the human mind in its complexity. Scientists are working on this and it is called “artificial intelligence”.
Some computers today are already very sophisticated (and by extension, their software programs). They are used to compute for complex physics problems as well as predict weather data which in itself is based on a number of constantly changing variables and inputs. The sheer volume of the data that can be processed simultaneously at such high speeds can give you an idea on how the software programs work. They are also used to simulate hypothetical situations such as the effects of an atomic bomb on a city’s population, for example. It will be able to predict scenarios which would otherwise be impossible to carry out in real life.
